The county's population was estimated to be 63,147 in the year 2006, making it the eighth largest in the state. Its county seat and most populous city is El Dorado. The county is a part of the Wichita Metropolitan Statistical Area. It was named in honor of pro-slavery South Carolina senator Andrew Pickens Butler.
